Owwwwwwieeeeeee!!!!!!!!
I am currently in some seriously agonizing pain!! M husband loves jalapeno poppers (jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese and then fried), so I decided to be nice and make him a batch since he has had to work all weekend. I'm an idiot and I didn't wear glves while I was handling the peppers and now I have what can only be described as chemical burns covering most of my left hand. I have tried EVERYTHING to make the burning go away, but NOTHING is working! I've been resigned to sitting on the couch trying not to cry with a bigbag of ice on my wounded hand. My sister suggested something with lidocaine (sp?) in it, but I dont' have any at the house so I'm going to have to go to the store to get some soon. This has been my DUH moment of the week, and I told my husband that I'm just going to have to buy the poppers ready-made from now on!!

Post a Commentsorry so many typos, I typed the whole post using only my right hand!
Aw, that sucks! I love jalapeños but I always wear gloves while handling them.
I wish I knew what would help you.
I found this infor and I hope it helps! ♥
"The November 20, 1991 issue of Jama recommends an antidote in their section "Cooling the burn from hot peppers." The author recommends any substance that contains casein (e.g. milk, milk chocolate, some beans and nuts). Casein, a lipophyllic phosphoprotein, works to "cool the burn" as a detergent that literally strips the capsaicin from its receptor binding site. This is effective because it is the lipophyllic side chain of the capsaicin molecule that interacts with the lipoprotein of the receptor."
"Workers who pick the hot peppers have observed that the capsaicin is insoluble in cold water and only slightly soluble in hot water. Capsaicin may be removed, however, by bathing in vinegar."
Thanks for your recommendation Cheshire and your concern Whip! I tried EVERYTHING last night to try and cool off the horrendous burning from the jalapenos, I tried dipping my hand in milk, orange juice, and rubbing it with a mixture of baking soda and water (all solutions I found on the internet that had worked for others previously), but none of those stopped the burning for more than a few minutes. Finally, the only thing that seemed to work was numbing my whole hand with and ice pack until I could no longer feel the burning, or my hand. I'd do that until it wore off, then do it again.
It feels much better this morning, but I feel like if I had not done something, the skin looked like it would have started blistering!! I never realized that those things could burn you that bad! I should have known better anyway, my skin is so sensitive it gets "burned" by harsh soap sometimes!
oh wow that sounds painful! I hope you're feeling better Ash!

I'm glad that it is feeling a little better now.

It IS much better today and if nothing else, I learned a valuable lesson. Ashley + hot peppers= very bad idea.
Awwww
Glad to hear you're doing better.
I once rubbed my eye right after breaking up a hot pepper into sauce. Yikes!
yeah, I think I was so concerned that I was going to get it in my eye (because I ALWAYS do stuff like that!) that I didn't think about it burning my hands.
Thats so weird, I've handled them, and never had burns. I hope he appreciated the poppers!
He did, he ate almost all of them. I ate one, but it was so damn hot, I couldn't eat more than that.
Wait! Jalapenos can burn your hands?
OMG thats crazy

Apparently so! I didn't really think about it before, but I know I'll think about it from now on! I always assumed people wore gloves while cutting peppers to keep from getting the juice in their eyes or nose, but I figured I'd be really careful and make an effort not to touch my face. I succeeded in not touching my face, but my hand literally felt like I had been burned by fire.
Jalapenos are dangerous. Have you ever gotten juice in your eye? YIKES!
You are such a great wife for wanting to do that for him
Thanks, I like to take care of him, he works so hard sometimes. He didn't get in from work last night until 3AM. They're trying to finish up a job so that they can start ANOTHER job on Monday.
i accidentally rubbed my eye after eating pizza with hot pepper flakes on it. i wnated to remove my eyeball from the socket and let it air out for awhile.
PAINFUL.
Ouch! I try to keep things like tht away from my eyes at all cost. Once I cut up some garlic and then rubbed my eye, I never knew that garlic was so spicy, I also wanted to remove my eyeball and let it air out.
OUCH! I'm glad your hands are better.
